Being disappointed in the book you mentioned, I set it aside before reaching that part of the narrative. Can't comment fairly having only read one of the two books mentioned.

Navy Gray focuses on industrial and manufacturing operations in Columbus, much of which was devoted to construction for the Confederate Navy. It is quite interesting; thoroughly researched and difficult to put down. It's not a comprehensive study of wartime Columbus, but the author left few sources untouched.
