Re: 3rd BN SS

Lee,
The six companies (A-F) comprising the 3rd Battalion Sharpshooters were drawn from Wofford's Georgia Brigade by June 1863 as follows: A-18th GA, B-24th GA, C-16th GA, D-Cobb's Legion, E-Mixed, F-Phillips Legion. So as you see, a member of Co. E could have come from any of the original regiments. I have identified four members of Co. E who were confirmed or thought to have been at Gettysburg (with their original units noted): 3Cpl Milton Barrett (16th GA), Pvt John B. L. Wall (24th GA), Pvt-Sgt Maj William B. Porter (Phillips Legion), Albert H. Dodd (24th GA, Co. C). As listed in the Supplement to the Official Records, the officers appointed to Co. E were: Capt John F. Martin (16th GA), 1Lt Payson L. Ardia (Phillips Legion, Co. L), 2Lt Joseph G. Nichols (24th GA, Co. D), and 2Lt John E. Shelton (18th GA, Co. A). However, Nichols declined to accept the appointment and Shelton took his place. Tom
