The Georgia in the Civil War Message Board - Archive

Goobers!

The American Civil War Round Table (UK) has been approached by a Research Officer of the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) with a request for information that can be included in a food programme. Specifically their immediate subject of interest, and we were approached as they wished for information about the use of this crop during the Civil War. To quote from the original request:

More specifically, we'd like to cover the importance of peanuts during the American civil war - how important they were to the Confederate soldiers as a source of nutrition, how they prepared then, stories on this matter, and so on!

This is a serious request for information, and we would dearly like to help. Obviously we have circulated our members to ask them to check their own personal libraries and we have contacted members of the Civil War Community in the US. However such details of military logistics ( although undoubtedly of critical importance at the time!) do tend to be ignored subsequently.

I am therefore approaching you with a request for any information that you can make available to me via the internet or for any recommendations as to where else I might ask.

Inevitably as this originated in a large organization - time apparently is short.

I do hope that you can and will assist,

Best wishes from London
