Bob,

There were a few Stones in the 50th Georgia, but I didn't see a James Stone with the 1838 birthdate. There was a Private James J. Stone in Company C, Coffee County, but he was listed as being born in Irwin County in 1828. The 50th Georgia Infantry Regiment was made up primarily of men from south Georgia. Although some of the men from Company F, Decatur Infantry, were apparently from DeKalb County, I found no Stone in that company. Other men from the 50th came from Thomas, Brooks, Colquitt, DeKalb, Lowndes, Pierce, Clinch, Berrien, Echols, Fayette and Ware counties.

In the 50th, there were at least four other Stones: George R. Stone of Company A, who was killed at Fox's Gap; John W. Stone of Company G, who was captured at Knoxville; William Stone of Company C, who was wounded at Chancellorsville and Cold Harbor; and William H. Stone of Company A, who was wounded at Fox's Gap and Gettysburg, and captured at Cedar Creek.

There is a chance that your James Stone was in the 50th, but doubtful. You may want to check the Compiled Services Records or Georgia Confederate Pension records, but my prelinminary research doesn't show your man in the 50th. If you do find that he was, please let me know so I can add him to the 50th roster.
