Col. Lamar's regiment in Savannah Oct. 1861

I recently came across an old news article in the MEMPHIS DAILY APPEAL shown at the bottom of this post. I'm not from Georgia, so I thought I'd ask for some help. What was the unit ID of Col. Lamar's regiment mentioned in the aritcle below?

So far, my research indicates that it might have been Col. Thomas G. Lamar of the 1st Battalion South Carolina Artillery who died in 1862 of yellow fever. But it seems odd that an artillery unit would have rec'd Enfields.

There was also a Lucius M. Lamar of the 8th Georgia Infantry, but he wasn't promoted to Colonel until Dec. 1861 and this regiment may not have been in Savannah at this time.

Anyway, any help identifying Lamar's regiment near Savannah in October 1861 would be much appreciated. ... Mike Bailey

The Enfield Rifle.—Col. Lamar's regiment, in camp near Savannah, were armed with the English Enfield rifle, a few days since. They were undoubtedly a part of the recent heavy importation. The News of the 30th, says: "Great curiosity was evinced by our people to see this new weapon, and a large concourse of people visited the camp ground yesterday to inspect it. The regiment comprises a fine body of men, and we have no doubt when an opportunity presents they will distinguish themselves."
