I have a theory about such post-war friendships among former enemies. Men who lived in parts of the state untouched by the ravages of war were probably more inclined to forgive and forget. The war was simply a contest of men against men, where both sides suffered casualties.

However, if a man's own home lay in the path of Sherman's army, if it was invaded and destroyed by what Lee called "those people", if his own mother, wife or sisters and other helpless family members were robbed and left homeless by Federal soldiers, feelings on this matter might be different.
