Unless the T. J. Irvin in the 13th Georgia Regiment was a cavalryman or an officer, and he evidently was not, he had no reason to carry a sword.
There is a Thomas J. Irwin who was a company officer of Co. "E", 6th Georgia State Guards. He might have carried a sword.
