Re: James Stone,50th Infantry of Georgia

The Augusta Georgia Chronicle and Sentinel of 31 July 1863 has a casualty list of the 50th Georgia at Gettysburg, which includes Private J. Stone of Company C, listed as wounded. Jim Parrish of Tallahassee says that James J. Stone was wounded on 2 July, which was when most of the regiment's losses occurred. Based on a study that I have done on casualty causes at Gettysburg, 2/3 of the 50th Georgia's casualties (from a sample size of 15 individuals) were inflicted by Federal artillery (which was posted along the Wheatfield Road). The incoming rounds all seemed to be either shell, case shot, or canister. The remaining 1/3 fell from enemy infantry "minie" balls, predominantly from Caldwell's Division of the Union Second Corps, which was encountered in the woods west and southwest of the famous Wheatfield.
