Re: Company G, 1st Reg't GA Inf. (Olmstead's)

Bette --

Here's the problem -- Olmstead's 1st Georgia Regiment was recruited in Chatham County, in and around the city of Savannah. Dade is about as far away from Savannah as you can get, and still be in Georgia. I don't think there's any connection here.

There is another James Cassidy in Co. "B", 43rd Georgia Regiment, but he apparently was from Cherokee County, Ga., and survived the war. Listed in the 1860 census, there is a James A. Cassady, age 39 and born in Tennessee, living near Rutledge in Grainger County TN. Possibly the same man?

Based on this man's age, origin and location, it doesn't appear likely that Cassady enlisted in Confederate service. The family story may have some validity, but in a different way than we hear it today. People use the word "killed' when they mean "died". It's also possible for a citizen in Dade County to have died as a result of violence during the war without being in the military.

These are some issues to consider.
