Re: Company G, 1st Reg't GA Inf. (Olmstead's)

Thank you for your response Alan.
The J H Cassidy listed as killed (National Archive record), is not listed in the roster of the 1st GA Inf., Chatham County. Am I correct in thinking that he may have joined this unit at a later date or was reassiged ?

Considering the distance (Dade CO to Chatham CO).... In my passed research I noted that when the 6th GA infantry was organized in 1861,it included men from several counties. Dade County was among those counties. In July 1863, under John T Loftin, the men from 6th were sent to Charleston Harbor, fighting at Battery Wagner. Same time frame and location for Cassidy being there. Here again, I haven't found J.H.Cassidy in this (6th) roster.

I also made the following notation. On July 10, 1863 the regiments of the 1st, 12th, 18th and 63rd GA joined the 21st SC in the garrison of Battery Wagner, under the overall command of Colonel Olmstead. Noting also that men were being reassigned.

In addition to the National Archive index record I received in 2002, a look up from Gene Harrison as:
Cassidy, James H.(or Cassiday) ...private. Killed at Battery Wagner, Morris Island, S.C., August 12, 1863.....
I am not convinced that this is not my ancestor and appreciate any additional information.

I have researched and eliminated most of the other James H. and James Cassidy/Cassady/Cassiday's (listed in the Soldier & Sailor System's on the net) as being my ancestor.

About my ancestor, in a history of Eastern TN he is listed as James H., the oldest son born to Adam and Anna Hice Caseday/Casady , born Feb.28,1824, died in the Civil War. The family had relocated fron TN to Dade County GA.
About his age, if he was the soldier that was killed 8/12/1863, he would have been 39 yrs old. I was under the impression that all able-bodied men served or paid another to serve in their place. Is age 39 really an issue?
Thanks,
Bette
