In Response To: Gen. Edward L. Thomas ()

Robert, General Thomas was appointed by President Cleveland in 1885 to serve in the US Land Department and then in 1893 he served in the Indian Bureau in the Oklahoma Territory until his death in March 10, 1898. He was buried at Kiowa, OK in Oak Hill/City Cemetery. He was the younger brother of Captain Lovick P. Thomas, 35th Georgia Quartermaster, and the uncle of Henry Andrew "Heck" Thomas. The 12-year-old Heck Thomas assisted General Thomas' Brigade staff as a drummer and courier. After the war Heck became a US Marshal out west and was the character that the 1970's NBC television show "Hec Ramsey" was based on. Heck became the chief of police for Lawton, OK and died in 1912 at age 62 "with his boots on."
