I would appreciate any more history or information about the 14th Georgia Infantry and my great grandfather, Pvt. William Ellijay Gilmer.

What I have is as follows:

My great grandfather, William Ellijay Gilmer (1848-1914), son Daniel H. and Ellen (Dodson) Gilmer, was born on a farm near Milledgeville, Georgia. In 1861 at the age of 13, he enlisted in Jasper County Georgia as a drummer in Capt. Robert H. Fulton's Co.G, Col. A.V. Brumby's 14th Georgia Infantry Regiment. In 1863, he became a rifleman and remained in the 14th Georgia Infantry regiment through the seige of Petersburg. After the the hardships of Petersburg, Pvt. Gilmer deserted and went home to Jasper County. In 1868, a family friend from Georgia named John Calhoun Pinkney Higgins offered my great grandfather a job on his cattle ranch in Lampasas County Texas. In 1870, "Bill" Gilmer boarded his uncle's river steamer and went down the Chattahoochie River to the Gulf of Mexico and then west to New Orleans. In New Orleans, he got a job on a keelboat and went up the Mississippi River to the Red River to the inland port of Jefferson Texas by way of the Cypress Creek - Red River inland waterway. In 1874, he was married in Gatesville,Texas and moved to Higgin's Gap in Lampasas County and went to work for J.C.P."Pink" Higgins as a teamster and horse wrangler. In 1892, J.C.P. Higgins sold his holdings when the streams, rivers and ground water dried up after a severe ten year drought.My great grandfather went to work on Frank Gholson's ranch, a former Texas Ranger, as a teamster and windmiller. He died in Lampasas County Texas in 1914 and is buried at the Smith Cemetery near his log cabin at Higgin's Gap.

Since he was a deserter and he left the state in which he enlisted, Bill Gilmer's widow asked ex-Texas Ranger Frank Gholson and a number of friends to attest and sign a document stating he was in the 14th "Texas" Infantry in order that she could receive his Confederate pension from the state of Texas.
