Confederate dead left on the field were buried in trenches by Federal soldiers. Even if Federals were so inclined (they weren't), Confederates did not carry individual identification tags, so it was impossible to identify the dead. Northerners really didn't have the time or the interest to dig graves for each Confederate soldier, let alone mark them.
