Carole, your g-g-grandfather was actually killed in action at the Battle of Jericho Ford [Va.]on May 23,1864. The place is west of Hanover Junction. His body was probably buried by Union troops where he fell as the 35th Georgia and the rest of Brigadier General Edward Thomas' Georgia Brigade were overrun. They retreated about a mile back to the Virginia Central Railroad tracks. The property is now privately owned. Details of the fight and specific mention of Captain Carter is made in my book "Red Clay to Richmond: Trail of the 35th Georgia Infantry Regiment."
