I could find little of this unit but what I note below. The one and only card found in their Compiled Service Record files is identical to that of Capt./Maj. Whitesides quoted below, not dated.

Captain Samuel J. Whitesides, Company A, Columbus Naval Iron Works Battalion, Muscogee County. Later Major
This organization was also known as Whiteside's Naval Battalion (Local Defense). It was paroled at Columbus, Geogia in May 1865.

Muscogee County, Georgia; Randolph County, Alabama - Iron Works Battalion, Whiteside's Naval Battalion Infantry
