Hi, my dircet ancester A.D. Crumley (Alexander Doster Crumley)was a member of Avery's 4th Georgia Cavalry, Company B under Captain May. He served as a Private. He enlisted October 4th, 1862 in Murray Co, GA for a period of three years. He was a Blacksmith before the war and a Blacksmith after the war. Family stories claim that he shoed horses for both the North and the South. His military record states that he was detailed to work on wagons in a Nov-Dec 1863 Muster. This would support that he was probably a Blacksmith during the war. His record left no personal papers or medical card information. His record further states that he deserted December 20th, 1863 at Cartersville, GA. He was born October 17, 1824, and died natral causes January 1902 near Apison, TN.

I have done some reasearch but have found very little on the 4th Georgia Cavalry. He deserted before it became the 12th, although I have researched both the 4th and the 12th. My questions are as follows:

Did Company B join Wheeler in the reported "Wheeler and Roddey's Raid" during september 30-October 17, 1863?

In the "Suppliment to the Official Records" It claims that company B, was apart of other companies, A-B, B, C-A, for information on Company E see Company B, for information on company B see company A, etc. Is there someone that can straighten this out for me. When the regiment changed from the 4th to the 12th is this when the companies changed, also?

I make the assumtion that he deserted for all the obviious reasons. It was a bad winter, his family was near by (Mt. Yonah). He had a young wife and two children. He had not been paid since June of 1863. I believe he deserted and was picked up by union forces and probably took the Othe. It is said that he shoed horses for the north.

Are there records for soldiers that took the "Othe"? There is no record of a pension or file of pension which would inicate he was not intitled to one due to deserting.
