My grandfather was also a member of Avery's 4th Georgia Cavalry. His name was John A. Marlow and he served in James H. Graham's Company H from Coweta County. I have for many years sought information regarding the 12th Ga (as it came to be designated), but information is sketchy. I'm always hoping to find others interested in the 12th, so I'll throw this out there.
Col Avery was a newspaperman after the war, serving as editor of the Atlanta Constitution. He also wrote History of the State of Georgia, which is more of a political history and only touches briefly on the 12th Ga Cav. Does anyone know if Col Avery wrote any particular memoirs of his wartime service or of the 12th Ga Cav?
Next, the regimental Executive Officer, Lieutenant Colonel William L. Cook, was court-martialed and resigned his commission. Does anyone know the particulars?
Next, and lastly, the Whitfield Murray Historical Society in Dalton, Georgia will be doing a program on H.C. Erwin on April 18th at 2:00 pm in the West Hill cemetery in Dalton. H.C. Erwin was an officer in the 12th Ga Cav and later became a prominent postwar public servant in Dalton. I would encourage anyone with an interest in the 4th/12th Ga Cavalry to attend. I am told that the speaker is quite knowledgeable about Avery's 4th/12th. For more info, call the Whitfield Murray Historical Society at 706.278.0217
Hope to see you there!
