Re: 34th Georgia Co. K - G. B. Harris

Alan and Ms. Seppala,

The 34th Georgia on December 9, 1862 was located, along with her sister regiments (36th, 39th, 56th, and 57th Georgia Infantry Regiments), were located in and around Manchester and Tullahoma. These regiments made up Taylor’s Brigade, Stevenson’s Division and in late December would move to Vicksburg. Chattanooga was the major logistical base for the region at the time and had several hospitals and one of them being on Lookout Mountain. This hospital was noted for not being the cleanest of hospitals. There was also a Camp of Direction there. A Camp of Direction is/was used to gather pieces of units or individuals and gain some type of positive control over them while they are awaiting transportation to their parent organization. I know that the 34th Georgia had a handful of soldiers in the this situation and very likely other regiments too.

There were several Harris soldiers in Company K, 34th Georgia:

Harris, Beverly S. Killed at Vicksburg.
Harris, Lazarus H. Captured and paroled at Vicksburg.
Harris, Sanders Favors. Captured at Missionary Ridge and sent to Rock Island, Illinois.
Harris, Tillman W. Captured at Chickamauga, Georgia, November 24 or 26, 1863. Sent to Rock Island, Illinois, December 9, 1863.

For more detail you would need to look at the Compiled Service Records of each of the soldiers. The source I obtained this information is notoriously incomplete and sometimes even wrong but it is a base from which to work from. It is my experience that soldiers that did not have a record beyond Vicksburg tells me one of two things. The first is that they deserted and the second it is possible they died of disease while at home on furlough. The last man (Tillman) I believe was captured at Chickamauga Station, Tennessee rather than Chickamauga, Georgia. Chickamauga Station was just east of Missionary Ridge and it would match up with the time period. Chickamauga Station was located at about where the passenger terminal for the Chattanooga Municipal Airport is at today. It was the supply deport for the Army of Tennessee.

Ms. Seppala, I hope this helps.

Respectfully,

Gerald D. Hodge, Jr.
