Re: James W. Price Cobb's Legion, Company K

According to William S. Smedlund’s book, Camp Fires of Georgia’s Troops, 1861-1865, Camp Maynard was in Virginia. Its exact location was not known, but it was probably a picket camp near Stevensburg, which is about 8 miles from Culpeper. Since this man enlisted at Camp Maynard, there is a possibility he may have been from VA instead of GA. If this is true, then perhaps he left (deserted) from the Legion cavalry and joined (or rejoined) a VA unit. Sometimes men who were listed as being deserters may have actually been killed or captured without their command knowing what had happened to them. Cobb's Legion Cavalry Battalion was definitely in that part of VA during the spring of 1863 and they later played a very important part during the Battle of Brandy Station on 9 Jun 1863.
