Thanks for your help. Until properly discharged, a soldier remained on roll and was due payment for time in service. As noted in your post, Thomas Dobbs was present for duty on the company rolls for Sept-Oct 1863, a year after being wounded at Sharpsburg. He may not have returned to duty afterwards, and it's possible that he was discharged after the last roll on file and it just isn't recorded in his file. However, as long as Thomas Dobbs was carried on roll, I cannot agree that his military career with this command was over. He should have been discharged earlier, but the government owed him monthly pay and commutation of rations for every day he remained on roll.

For what it's worth, Thomas Dobbs is not my ancestor. I'm simply attempting to set the record straigt.
