"Liquor contributed to a near-violent incident on the Fourth of July. The fracas
started when the Jackson Guards of the 2d Regiment, better known as the Irish Company. These Sons of Erin had acquired a supply of drink and fighting broke out. The company guard tried to halt the row but most of the company resisted, armed themselves and prepared to fight. The entire regiment was called to arms and it appeared there might be an actual armed battle. After an uneasy few moments peace was restored. Fortunately no one was seriously injured, but had the men been supplied with cartridges, some would have undoubtedly killed" (Correspondence with a "Private")
