Re: 6th Georgia Cavalry Photographs
I have recently started research into my great-grandfather Lewis Walter Phillips' past. He was originally from Carroll county, Ga., i think. So far, i have came up with some interesting info. Seems he was a member of Co.A, 6th Georgia Cavalry, and also Co. G, 41st. Georgia infantry. He was captured 2 times during the war, once at Vicksburg,Miss. and then at Newbourn,N.C. His first capture at Vicksburg lasted 2 days. After swearing to never bear arms against the U.S. again, he was captured again in 1864,and served the remainder of the war at Harts Island, N.J. I have also found records showing that he applied for a veteran's pension in 1919. After being denied, another record shows that his records were found and he was awarded $75. After the war he resided in and around Big Stone Gap, Va. and was the last surviving confederate veteran in Wise county, Va. He passed away on Feb.,2, 1933, in Wise Co. Va., at the age of 98, and recently a stone was erected at his gravesite showing that he was a confederate vet. I have also located a picture of him and his second wife, when he was a very old man. Any infomation about how to do more research into his service time would be greatly appreciated.
