Re: 1861 company muster rolls and enrollment data

The original roll for the "Etowah Guards" appears to be missing, but the next roll for Sept.-Oct. 1861 exists. This company organized at Cartersville GA, July 9, 1861. In 1860 Cartersville could be found in Cass County, which soon became Bartow County. George E. and John E. Ballew enlisted on Mar. 4, 1862, so the original roll would not have carried their names. John was wounded at 2nd Manassas and died of wounds at Warrenton VA, Oct. 3, 1862. George was captured at Petersburg VA, April 1, 1865, talking the oath of allegiance at Hart's Island NY, June 15, 1865. The last record was misfiled as "J. E. Ballew" in John's service file; another record has been misfiled as "E. Ballen", all three with the 14th Georgia Regiment.

Copies of military service files such as these can be ordered here.
