Lt. Col. Joseph Karge, First New Jersey Cavalry, in his report, stated:

"The number of paroled prisoners amounts to about 1,300 or 1,400. They were all eager to get their papers, and my officers had their hands full to issue them, and, once provided with such, they pressed around me, asking whether this scrap of paper would henceforth free them from military duty, and, when assured that it would, they went off with gleaming faces, assuring me that they rather would rot than to take up arms again against the Yankees. Not an unkind word was passed, on either side, during the whole transaction. My troops behaved in a splendid manner, and made a very favorable impression among the inhabitants of the town and prisoners."
OR V19, Pt.2,p. 8

Karge entered the town at 2:30 PM and departed at 5:30 on the Warrenton pike in the direction of Centreville.

I have checked the records of eight men captured that day at Warrenton and do not find copies of any parole certificates issued. In the time Karge and his men were in town, there would not have been sufficient time to print and issue formal parole certificates. Perhaps each of those captured were issued individual slips of paper indicating their parole. However, it appears that his forces only produced a List of those captured and paroled for their own records. They may have well produced a duplicate list and delivered that copy to the senior Confederate officer present. The only document in their records is a card noting: ___________
appears on a list of Prisoners taken and paroled at Warrenton,Va., Sept. 29, 1862. List dated Hdqrs. Army of Potomac, 11th Corps., Sept. 30, 1862.

Of the eight records I observed, all returned to duty.
