In Response To: Medals ()

The United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC) has an award, The Cross of Military Service as described below. I do not believe one may apply for one, however, a UDC member may sponsor one.

"The Cross of Military Service is an outgrowth of the Southern Cross bestowed on Confederate Veterans by the United Daughters of the Confederacy and has been established as a testimonial to the patriotic devotion of certain Confederate Veterans and their descendants.

"It may be bestowed on lineal descendants of Confederate Veterans who have served honorably in time of War or Conflict. These Crosses are: First, the Spanish-American War Cross of Military Service. Second, The Philippine Insurrection Cross of Military Service. Third, the World War I Cross of Military Service. Fourth, the World War II Cross of Military Service. Fifth, the Korean Conflict Service Cross. Sixth, the Vietnam Conflict Service Cross.

"The Cross of Military Service is to be worn only by the person on whom it is bestowed. At the death of the recipient, the Cross may be given to the widow, widower or member of immediate family, but may not be worn by them. It may be framed for display."

I received the award last year for Korean War service.
