J. H. Irvin, Private, Captain King's Battery, Georgia Light Artillery, cards are filed with J. H. Irwin

J. H. Irwin, enlisted as a Private from desertion in Captain King's Company* of Captain T. L. Massenburg's Battery of Light Artillery September 1, 1863, sent to hospital October 24, 1863, serving with Benet's[?] Battery December 8, 1863, originally enlisted August 10, 1862 at Jackson by Lieutenant Davis, no further records

* This company originally served in the battalion which was known as Montgomery's Battalion Georgia Artillery, subsequently the 14th Battalion Georgia Artillery.

This battalion appears to have ceased to exist as a Georgia organization about October, 1862, and the batteries of which it was composed served at various times independently and with commands from other States, in Robertson's Battalion Reserve Artillery.

14th Battalion, Georgia Light Artillery (Montgomery's)

14th Artillery Battalion was organized during the fall of 1862 with six companies. The unit was assigned to the Army of Tennessee but served detached much of the time as it was an administrative organization rather than a field command. The different companies served in Tennessee and in North Mississippi, and most were active in the Atlanta Campaign. It is not known how many members surrendered in North Carolina, but Batteries A and E no longer had cannons were serving as infantry. Lieutenant Colonel Joseph T. Montgomery and Major Joseph Palmer were in command. http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/soldiers.cfm
