D G. Pender enlisted as a Private in Company H, 8th Georgia Cavalry at Hicksford, Virginia August 1, 1864, under Remarks is the comment: "Reported for duty 1st September 1864," present on the December 31, 1864 muster roll, no further records, this was the one and only company muster roll extant

Record of Events for Company A, 8th Georgia Cavalry for the period August 31 to December, 1864, stationed at Camp Hempston, Virginia

Stationed near Petersburg, Va. Sept. 1st 1864 and did picket duty near Roples[?] farm. on the 14th of Sept. a detachment of twenty-eight well mounted men left Camp and marched to Storey Creek district 22 miles and there camped. On the 15th we rec'd marching orders and marched all day, camped and at 2 o'clock A. M. on the 16th at day break attacked the enemy near the head of Black Water River and were engaged during the day. Returned to Storey Creek and camped. On the 17th returned to camp. On the 15th Sept a detachment of dismounted men engaged the enemy near Roples Farm, Va. On the 24th Dept had engagement with the enemy at Proples farm Va. On 1st Oct had a skirmish near Boysaw House. Oct. 3rd moved to Burges Mill where we remained on picket duty until 3th Dec. when we removed to Storey Creed. Oct. 29 had an engagement with the enemy at the Cousen House also at Burges Mill had one man wounded and two captured during the engagement. On the 9th Dec. engaged the enemy at Three Creek near Ballfield, Va. On the 10th pursued the enemy to Story Creek. Moved from ?Storey Creek on the 17th December to Bullfied where we yet remain.

John Pender enisted as a Private in Company I, 2nd Regiment Georgia Rangers*, May 13/June 25, 1862 at Goldsboro, North Carolina, transferred from Company I to Company H, 62nd Georgia Cavalry, recorded as 2nd Corporal April 20, 1864, recorded in Co. H (Artillery) 62nd Ga. Cav. October 20, 1864 at Hicksford, Va., no further records

* This company was later merged into the 8th Georgia Cavalry and ultimately into 16th Battalion North Carolina Cavalry
