The right place to look for facts about a soldier will be his military service file.

Cash was not captured, but entered Federal lines voluntarily and took the oath of allegiance as a deserter. An image of his signed oath, along with a physical description, appears in his file. It's dated July 18, 1864, Lousiville KY.
