Since Confederate commanders had no need to submit reports, we know little about Southern regiments during the Appomattox Campaign.

In the hours before dawn on April 2, 1865, the Georgia brigade of General E. L. Thomas held part of the extended lines west of Petersburg. An assault by Wright's VI Corps overran that part of the line, leaving a great gap in the main line beyond Forts Gregg and Whitworth. As the Georgians retreated towards the main line, General A. P. Hill rode into the vacated area and was killed.

For further reading, notice the book advertisement on this board about the fall of Forts Gregg and Whitworth. The 45th Georgia surrendered a few days later with eight officers and 85 enlisted men.
