The general public thinks in terms of "the" flag of a particular command, as if only one existed during the war. Have you thought about how many flags a typical three or four-year regiment might have carried over time? Obviously flags lost in battle needed to be replaced, and flags had to be 'retired' due to wear and age. Then there were occasions on which commanders replaced battleflags of their regiments with others of a new pattern. Do you have a rule of thumb for how many different flags a typical regiment might have carried?
