Re: George W. Bullock, Co. K, 53rd Regt.

Mr. or Ms. Chase,

Company K, 53rd Georgia Infantry was from Monroe County, Georgia. In the 1860 Federal Census for Monroe County, Georgia, I have the following.

Two households, the first the head of household is Cordy Bullock with wife Jane, both age 50 and an apparent son George, age 11 in the Buena Vista District.

The second household is of one Jesse Mays, 27, Lawyer. In his household are two males, George W. Mays, age 15, and Joseph Bullock, age 16 in the Forsyeth District. I would look at this house as a potential person of interest. Several surnames live in the same household and the census takers were not always accurate. I believe it is possible that the first name and surname got mixed up between these two young men.

I did not see a Bullock soldier in the Compiled Service Records of the 53rd Georgia Infantry Regiment so I do not know his date of enlistment. What records are you looking at? The regiment was formed in June 1862, therefore, it is possible that either of the young men in the second household could have been susceptible to the Conscription Act of April 1862. I find it HIGHLY unlikely that a thirteen or fourteen year old would have been allowed to join the ranks. It did happen on very rare occasions but that was typically the exception and not the rule and normally that happened with the patriotic fever of the early war regiments.

I hope this helps.

Respectfully,
