15th Georgia flag

The Rutgers University Libraries in New Jersey has the papers of Evan Morrison Woodward, who I believe was the fellow who wrote a book on the 2nd Pennsylvania Reserves. His papers contain correspondence from other brigade members who participated in the charge from Little Round Top at Gettysburg late on 2 July 1863 against members of McLaws Division, and on 3 July against the 15th Georgia. Woodward wrote the following letter to Secretary of War William C. Endicott on 14 December 1886, seeking to confirm the award of the Medal of Honor for the capture of the 15th Georgia's colors: "Sir, Brig Genl S. W. Crawford comdg 3rd Div, 5 Corps, on July 10th 1863, forwarded his report on the conduct of his division at the battle of Gettysburg. He also forwarded the flag of the 15th Regt. Inft Georgia Vol., captured on July 3rd by Sergeant John [actually James] B. Thompson, Co. G, 1st Rifles Penna. Reserve Vol. Corps." The war department wrote back, confirming that Thompson was awarded the Medal of Honor in 1864, presumably for this action.
