Re: Muster roll of Co. K, 5th Reg. Vol. Inf.

Always read the service file to determine that wartime documents match the family story. In this case it does not.

Records for John Wesley Gilbert show that he enrolled in Co. "I", 5th Georgia Regt., May 11, 1861, Macon GA. After one year's service he became a member of Co. "A", 2nd Georgia Sharpshooter Battn. Gilbert was wounded at Murfreesboro TN, Dec. 31, 1862, and absent due to wounds for some time. The roll for Aug. 31, 1864, last on file, shows him present, serving as a nurse at the division field hospital. A pension application in his name appears to have been filed in 1915.
