The Georgia in the Civil War Message Board

Pricilla,

The regiment was originally the 2nd Regiment Georgia State Troops (Colonel Barkuloo), and was mustered into the service of the Confederate States in May 1862 as Colonel Barkuloo’s Regiment and subsequently became the 54th Georgia Regiment Infantry. Early in 1863 this designation was changed to 57th Georgia Infantry Regiment.

There were two Cochran soldiers in Company C, 57th Georgia and would have likely been related.

Private Francis M. Cochran. Company C, 57th Georgia.
Age 21 at the time of his enlistment on May 8, 1862 at Savannah, Georgia in Captain Lucien Q. Tucker’s Company, Barkuloo’s Regiment, Georgia Infantry. Private Cochran was paid an enlistment bounty of $50.00 and signed by his mark. He died at Vicksburg, Mississippi on July 2, 1863 of “debility.”

Private William G. Cochran, Company C, 57th Georgia.
Age 19 at the time of his enlistment on May 8, 1862 at Savannah, Georgia. He was paid an enlistment bounty of $50.00 and signed by his mark. Private William Cochran apparently died of wounds on June 30, 1863 at Vicksburg, Mississippi.

You can obtain the soldiers Compiled Service Record through the service offered through the flashing red box at the top center of the message board page.

As stated in a the other message to "Me", you may want to refer to Rev. Scott Walker's book, "Hell's Broke Loose in Georgia: Survival in a Civil War Regiment." The book is about the 57th Georgia.

I hope this helps.
