Re: 3rd Confederate Cavalry Regiment, Company E

Hello,

I realise this is an older thread but I am going to reply to it in the hopes that I can get some assistance as well.

My ggg-grandfather was also in the 3rd Cavalry and much of what the previous poster wrote is similar to the information I've received on him. I obtained his records from the Nat'l Archives and am trying to decipher them and comparing them to family lore.

My ggg-g lived in Murray County, GA and according to the records I received, the following took place:

-Enlisted on March 4, 1862.
-Vicksburg Parole document dated July 8, 1863
-Company Muster Roll dated 3/1/1863 states: "Promoted 12th Dec. 1863. Rec'd by exchange instead of AOE Coffee by order of Gen Hardee, Comdg."
-In Company Muster roll dated Feb. 29, 1864, it appears something took place (perhaps a demotion?) on his records it states "reduced from 4th corp to ranks March 1, 1864" -He is listed on his medical card (?) as a "Corporal Private" (?) and also says "See 39th GA infantry"
-Listed as AWOL on company muster roll, dated June 30, 1864
-Appears on register of Prisoners of War at Rock Island, record states: "Captured May 27, 1864 in Murray Co. GA, Confined June 6, 1864. Refused to take Oath"
-Appears on Roll of POWs from Louisville, KY which states: "Where captured: Murray Co. GA, May 27, 1864, Received as deserter, Refused to take the Oath"
-Appears on another POW roll from Louisville with similar information as above, with (again) "refused to take the oath"
-Roll of "Deserters from the Rebel Army" states: "When received: June 1, 1864, Where reported, Sent from the Dept*., Date when discharged May 3, 1864, By whose order discharged: Brig General Burbridge (?), Remarks: Oath and to remain north of the Ohio River during the war" at the bottom there is an additional annotation pertaining to the asterisk which reads: "of the C(illegible) to be released north of the Ohio River by order of the Maj Genl Thomas Cmdg Dept of the Cumberland (illegible). On roll. (1) Entry except for remark cancelled by (illegible)"
- There are three more records from Rock Island, all with "refused to take the Oath" on them.
-Rock Island record indicates he was released on May 9. 1865

The CSA records list his CO as a Captain Gibbons.

Family lore is that he was at Rock Island for a year, and the records seem (?) to substantiate this, and that he traveled on foot back to Georgia after being freed.

I was hoping some of the more schooled experts here may be able to assist in deciphering these records and reading this thread has also helped me formulate some ideas about what happened to him as well, so thanks for the replies here.

Kind regards and thanks.
