First, most State Guard companies were organized for a six-month term of service, typically between late July 1863 and early February 1864. Second, State Guard duties involved law and order issues, such as arresting deserters and turning them over the authorities. For that reason nearly all remained near home. A State Guard member could easily be at home and involve himself with wife and family issues.
