Could the James Wood listed near the bottom be Jonas Wood instead? My GGGrandfaher, Jonas Wood, was inHowell's Battery. In a Washington County, Georgia newspaper a J. B. Warthen wrote "A Brief History of Howell's Batteryof Light Artillery During the War Between the States". In it was this qoute: "the next battle was at Jonesboro, September 1, 1864. Howell's battery lost a good man and soldier, Jonas Wood, mortally wounded and died."

I have 121 letters from Jonas's time with the unit, written from 8 FEB 1862 - 16 SEP 1863. Most of these are from Jonas to his wife, Ann, and from Ann to Jonas. A few are to or from a sister and an uncle.

Fortunately for me, Jonas got a furlough in 1862 and his son, Robert (my GGrandfather), was born 12 JAN 1863.

The family was never able to learn where Jonas was buried. Jonesboro was less than a hundred miles away, but "back in the day" there was a dearth of funds, transportation, records, etc., and no internet at all.

Would appreciate your comments and sources of info. Jonas Wood does not appear in "Roster of Cofederate Soldiers 1861 - 1865" or in "Georgia Confederate Roster" because, I am told, records of many Artillery units were not included. The only reference I have found to Jonas, other than from the newspaper above, is in a book "Campfires ...." about smaller Confederate camps that had gotten little recognition by historians. I can't locate the book right now. It was written 12 - 20 years ago by an author from the College Park - East Point area. The only names that appear with the unit are those of the Company Commander (Martin's Company) and Jonas (twice in the book at different camps). My guess is that Jonas (Private) was Company Clerk.

Thank you for any information I can use in learning more about the unit Jonas served in.
