I found in some notes about " The Chronicles of the Old Guard of the Gate City Guard Atlanta, Georgia 1858-1915 by Henry Clay Fairman Byrd Printing Company Atlanta 1915

Page 33
We were ordered to the Green-Brier River, where we were almost daily and nightly in contact with Federal troops. Night Skirmishing was very frequent in those dark mountain gorges. where we could only detect the presence of our enemy by hearing them, Finally the Federal General Rosecrans, determined to attack us. Accordingly he advanced, driving in our pickets about daylight. As usual a detachment of the Gate City Guard formed part of the pickets, and their reserves made stubborn resistance, holding the enemy back until the army could get into position to receive the attack. The battle was fought in the valley of the Green Brier River and resulted in the retreat and defeat of the Federals. General Harry R. Jackson, of Georgia commanded the Confederate forces immediately in the field, with General Ed Johnston as second in command.

A private, David W, Brown of the Gate City Guard, who was one of the pickets killed in this action, was found after the battle on his knees leaning against a sapling, with his empty rifle held firmly as if taking aim. He was shot through the heart.

The regiment remained on the Green Brier river intl the last of November and was ordered to join Stonewall Jackson in the lower valley for the winter march on Hancock and Romeny.
