Color Guard question

"Regimental Return"
(Dated Jan/Feb 1862)
Sergt. McGee Co. B 19 Ga.
"Detailed to attend Col. W.W. Boyd to Georgia"

Note* Colonel Boyd resigned in January 1862

My question: Was it a textbook practice to select a "Sergeant" {from a regiment} to accompany a resigning officer back home?

Would a regiments Color-Sergeant and Color-Guard ever be detailed to do something like this?

I know Company "B" was designated the Color company of the 19th Georgia. And that this company was in Atlanta in January 1862
acting as funeral escort for a comrade in Co. "A" who died at Camp Johnson. Since Sgt. McGee was escorting his Colonel back home and that his company also in Georgia. Might it also be possible that the Color-Guard attended the Colonel back home and acted in the funeral in Atlanta? Were
Color-Bearers and members of the Color Guard ever detailed to these extra duties? You would think a Colonel would be given a special escort home
The regiment was in winter quarters and no battles at this time. So the Color Guard would'nt be needed by the regiment.

Any thought?

Best regards,
JOHN
