It might interest you to know that for a short period of time there was another 4th Georgia Cavalry. In the spring of 1863 the cavalry battalion of Smith"s Legion, commanded by John R. Hart, was increased to a regiment. The officers of this unit signed their pay and forage chits as members of the 4th Georgia Cavalry. March 27, 1863, "The Rome Courier," reported, "By the way I must post you and your readers as to a matter of some importance. Hart's battalion has been raised to a regiment and Lieut. Col. Hart promoted to Colonel. It is known and recognized as the 4th Georgia cavalry. The regiment is quite full and composed of excellent material. Col. Hart has the full confidence of his command and fully deserves it, I believe the confidence is mutual, for he has high opinion of the bravery and courage of his regiment." By May of 1863 all mention of the 4th was dropped and the unit became known as the 6th Georgia Cavalry. If in your research into Avery's attempts to straighten out the bureaucratic confusion over his regiments designation makes mention of Hart's 4th Georgia I would be interested in learning about it.
