I'd be interested in receiving any documentation about his desertion or his capture in the October 1863 raid into Middle Tennessee.
Capt. May's records show he was captured in the Sequatchie Valley (Anderson's Crossroads). Apparently in response to an inquiry, Col. Avery wrote from Oxford, Ala. to Major Mason, AAG, Army of Tennessee at Dalton, on April 5, 2004, that Capt. May jumped off a train betweeen LaVergne and Nashville and sprained his ankle. He never reported back to his regiment nor was any notice received from a hospital. Avery wrote that the last that was heard from May is that he was moving with his family to Florida. Avery's letter mentions that May made his way home and may have been captured again near Cleveland, TN, and that "he deserves to be reported for negligence at least."
