Re: 4th Georgia Cavalry - Avery's

Alan

I understand that my efforts are based on assumptions. A.D. Crumley's war information doesn't state that he even had a mount. However, I have read and have been told that there were many that deserted during this period, and that the South needed everyone and anyone they had. He was not officially the regiments blacksmith, although he did work in this area as stated. He would have been first a soldier and would have been ordered with others that were able to go on the raid. I have no information that states his health was poor or that he was not in attendance at this time. Other then, He was detached to work on wagons in a muster role dated Nov and Dec. 1863. His war information indicates that he was with Company B and would have been until his deserting in early to mid December of 1863. The raid was October 1863. The information that I have read on the subject indicates that he was more likely to have been on the raid then not to have been.

He did not have a horse, unless one was supplied him. The south did not have many able horses either. He may or may not have gone on the raid based on this alone. However, Wheeler also had wagons with ordinance and supplies and those that worked as blacksmiths would have been along if able. I don't know what I might find out in the end. I am doing my best to figure it out. I assume, those that were considered fit enough to fight were assigned to the raid.
