Thanks. I suspect that I made a mistake when I transposed the microfilm information to my fill-in-the-blank form. If I ever get around to writing something about the regiment, I'll make sure I get the name right.

I've spent years tracking down information about the movements of the regiment and have been to many of the places. But it's been a while since I studied my sources. Here is what I recall: as Longstreet was moving toward Knoxville, Wheeler took most (maybe all) of the cavalry on a raid of dubious value to Kingston, TN where the Clinch River empties into the Tennessee. He thus left Longstreet without any cavalry at a crucial time when Longstreet was chasing Burside's army back into Knoxville. Wheeler's men fought a brief skirmish at Kingston, and the records of several men of the 4thGa mention it (captured, killed, etc.). When Wheeler went to rejoin Longstreet, he stayed on opposite side of the Tennessee River from Knoxville.(Another move of dubious value.) But he left some cavalry behind in Kingston, including the 4thGa.

After Longstreet's defeat at Fort Sanders, he moved up the Tennessee Valley, and the federals chased him. The 4thGa marched 60 miles in one day from Kingston to Bean's Station, I think it was, and participated in the skirmish. The federals backed off to Knoxville, and Longstreet went into winter quarters around Morristown. During that winter, by all accounts a miserable one, there were battles at Mossy Creek (now Jefferson City) and Fair Garden (near Sevierville). Wheeler had by then returned to join the main army at Dalton, and left Will Martin in charge of Longstreet's cavalry. Martin's report on Mossy Creek says that the 4thGa did not participate, as it was on "detached service." (I have no idea where or what they were doing. Probably stealing horses from the overwhelmingly Unionist locals.) The service records of some men in the 4thGa show some captured and killed at Fair Garden.

In April, Longstreet gave up and took his army back to Virginia to rejoin Lee. Martin led the cavalry on an unbelievabley roundabout march to N. Ga. through Asheville and Greeneville. (They couldn't go straight down the Tennessee Valley because the federals controlled it.) I suspect that the regiment was at Cartersville before it went to Oxford, Ala.
