6th Battalion Calvary, Georgia State Guards

Seeking information on the activities of the 6th Battalion Calvary, Georgia State Guards during the Civil War. Would like to know when it was formed, why, where it was assigned, and whether it participated in any battles. Looking for information on a soldier that served in that unit--Thomas Cicero Poe. Family lore has it that Thomas was killed by the Gatewood Scouts on his way home for a visit. He was shot in the leg and then hung. Sartain's History of Walker County, Georgia mentions this incident, but erroneously says that it was Thomas's brother, Samuel Theron Poe who was killed. Any information you have would be appreciated. Thank you.
