James Ware of Catoosa County, Georgia

In going over my records, I have a note stating that James Ware (born November 29, 1822 in North Carolina; died somewhere on January 23, 1864) was in the Battle of Chickamauga and died of pneumonia fever near Chickamauga. This is the story from my mother who is now deceased. I also have a story from an uncle who stated that James Ware joined the Union Army and was a chaplain. I cannot verify these stories. In the census records, James Ware's occupation is a farmer. As I stated in my previous query, the Army gave the bones of James Ware back to his family in 1867. I would like to know what direction I should take in checking records or any clues that would tell me what unit he was in, what battles he fought in and where did they take him when he was wounded and later died. I appreciate any help and anyone's time. Thank you.
