Re: 4th Georgia Cavalry - Avery's

My Great Uncle, Pvt. Thomas L Tanner was a member of Co.F, 12th/4th GA Cavalry(Averys) Mustered in 15 Dec 1862 at Dalton, Reported 29 Dec 1860 at Resacca. Capt. Helvenstein's Co., 23 Batt'n GA Dragoons. Captured 13 Jun 1864 at Marietta while on a scout. POW at Rock Island, ILL. Transfered for exchange 15 Feb 1865. Died Aug.6, 1907 at Tilton, GA. He was a long time resident of Gordon Co. and interestingly he owned and operated Lay's Ferry(also known as Tanner's Ferry). I found several records of payment by the Confederate States to T.L.Tanner for ferrying wagons, horses, guns, casissons & men across the Oostanaula River from 1862 to 1865. Example; 7 Oct 1862, for 3 guns, 3 Caissons 6 horses & 7 men and horses. $6.70. I was under marching orders from Chattanooga to Camp Randolph therefor it became necessary to cross said river. Thos. H. Dawson, Capt. Comdg Battery. I am not sure when he bought property in Gordon Co. as he was a resident of Hall Co. in 1860. In a book by Jewell B. Reeve, Climb the Hills of Gordon, page 201, " Cross the Southern Railroad and you are not far from Lay's Ferry. Scene of a Civil War battle and the first crossing place of the Oostanaula river for Snake Creek settlers. The big old house there is the Henry Dodson home. It was owned by the Tanners during the war and was used as a hospital by the army. A blood spot on the floor was scrubbed repeatedly by the Dobson girls but could never be removed."
Page 202, "Since the Tanner house orginally stood in the field near the river, it must have been the Lay home before 1860. Thomas Tanner was one of 5 of David Tanner's son that served in the Confederate Army. My ggrandfather was the youngest son and being only 11 years, did not serve.
