Milton A. Pie aka Milton A. Pye - Believed to be a former Confederate with Company E 9th Regiment, Georgia Infantry. Company E was known as the "Talbot Guards". He is listed on his Confederate CMSR's as being Milton A. Pye and was taken prisoner during the Gettysburg campaign. Longstreet's Corps, Hood's Division, Anderson's Brigade. According to Confederate CMSR's Milton A. Pye enlisted with the Talbot Guards in March of 1862 at Talbotton, Georgia. According to the 3rd Maryland Cavalry CMSR's his name was Milton A. Pie. He was shown as being desirous of entering the Union Army on August 30, 1862 and signed his enlistment papers on September 18, 1863. He listed himself as being 20 years of age on September 18, 1863. He was mustered into service with Company G 3rd Maryland Cavalry on September 23, 1863 and like most former Confederates who joined this unit he was given a $25.00 bounty. It is believed that he could not write as he made his signature with a X. He was listed as having hazel eyes, dark hair; dark complexion. He deserted his Union unit on March 25, 1864 at New Orleans, Louisiana and was shown as owning the sutler $7.00 when he deserted. He was apprehended and arrested and put into confinement on April 25, 1864. How Private Milton A. Pie was arrested is in itself interesting. While in and around New Orleans, he tried to enlist as a new recruit for the 165th Regiment, New York Infantry and collect another bounty. This led to two court-martial charges. 1) Deserting the 3rd Maryland Cavalry. 2) Enlisting under false pretensions without being discharged from another unit. The court-martial charges listed his last name as being spelled as Pey. After doing a brief time in jail he rejoined the 3rd Maryland Cavalry and was promoted from Private to Corporal on May 4, 1865. He was mustered out of service with the 3rd Maryland Cavalry on September 7, 1865 at Vicksburg, Mississippi.
