Captains C. M. Jones and O. H. Cooke, 49th Georgia

The Official Records, and repeated in many subsequent publications, indicate that Colonel S. T. Player commanded the 49th Georgia Regiment at Gettysburg. However, the source, Heroes and Martyrs of Georgia, suggests two inaccuracies. First, S. T. Player was a Major during the Gettysburg campaign - his appointment to Colonel was backdated to 9 June 1863 once the campaign was over. Second, and more importantly, Major Player was not even present at Gettysburg due to ill health. According to Heroes and Martyrs, the regiment was commanded in the battle by Captain O. H. Cooke of Company F, and on the march by Captain C. M. Jones of Company H, who was killed while leading skirmishers in a charge toward Cemetery Ridge on the evening of 2 July. Greg Coco's work, Gettysburg's Confederate Dead, notes that Captain Charles M. Jones was buried on Michael Crist's farm; no record of post-war reburial is reported. It's time to set the record straight on the 49th Georgia's leadership at Gettysburg.
