Baldwin County ties - 4th, 9th, 45th Georgia

Some soldiers kept tabs on members of other companies raised in the same county, which has proven helpful to historians. So it was with Charles A. Conn, an officer in Company G, 45th Georgia. His 8 July 1863 letter to Mary A. Brantley, which was published in The Georgia Historical Quarterly, vol. 46, June 1962, No. 2, p. 189, includes mentions of men from Company F, 9th Georgia and Company H, 4th Georgia following the battle of Gettysburg. Conn writes, "I saw Peter Fair yesterday - their regiment [9th] suffered severely. Tom [probably Thomas H. Fair] was slightly wounded by a spent ball - two of their company were killed and several wounded including Capt. [Isaac S.] Sherman among the number. I also saw Lt. Herty of the Blues [4th], Butler and Delancey were killed and several wounded. Thus each company ... from old Baldwin mourn the loss of some of their members." On the march to Gettysburg, Conn was enroute to rejoining his company when he fell in with Hood's division, and spent the night with Company F, 9th Georgia, no doubt catching up on news and sharing information about Baldwin County residents.
