I have been researching my ancestors regiment, the 6th Georgia Cavalry. The 6th was in the same brigade as the 12(formally Avery's 4th) Georgia Cavalry. Avery's regiment had to change it's designation when Wheeler's Corp moved into the same department that had another 4th Georgia, I think it was known as Clinch's 4th Georgia. While not on the order of battle for Bentonville I have found sources proving the 6th Georgia was there. The Regimental Surgeon, R. D. Rudicil wrote in a tribute to his regiment that it was present a Bentonville. Captain James Harlow, a company commander in the 6th, made a post war list of the battles his company fought in, also listed Bentonville. Plus the 6th had a man killed at Bentonville. In 1878 Gen. Wheeler Compiled a table of his engagements and the Order of Battle of the units under his command. He never identifies the 12th GA only the 4th GA. So one doesn't know which 4th he is referring to. I suspect it is Avery's, as Avery's 4th Georgia was in Wheeler's corp since the start of the Atlanta Campaign. Wheeler lists the 4th and 6th Georgia as being at Bentonville. What I as taking a lot of time to say is, unless there is documentation that proves the 4/12 was elsewhere' don't trust the official order of battle for Bentonville.
